Celebrate National Trails Day
Sunday, June 6 – 9 am to noon.
Hike Blue-Blazed Shenipsit Trail, Soapstone Mountain and Land Trust properties. The hike will start with an uphill climb to the observation tower in the Shenipsit State Forest; on a clear day the view can include western Massachusetts, southern Vermont, New York and Mount Monadnock in New Hampshire. We will then continue down the mountain along trails maintained by CFPA, the Town of Somers, and NCLT to the Whitaker and McCann properties acquired by the Land Trust. Those who do not wish to hike the entire five miles can hike half-way and be shuttled back to the parking lot. Wear sturdy shoes; bring a snack and plenty of water. Moderate difficulty, moderate pace. Inclement weather cancels. Optional pizza stop afterwards. Meet at Soapstone Mountain parking lot off Gulf Road, Somers at 9 AM. Leaders: Judith Snyder and Wes Smith. For more information contact Judith Snyder at Judith.gs10@gmail.com or 860-749-5411.
